Helmets
Helmets are an essential safety accessory for many sports, including biking. Although bike helmets all pass the same safety standards, all helmets are not created equal.
So what's the difference between that $5 helmet and the $200 helmet you see on the Tour de France riders (and at Bike Tech)...
1 - Comfort and Fit - That inexpensive helmet is using fit technology that has been around for thirty years. In addition, many lower cost helmets are one size all and have a poor range of adjustment or none at all.
2 - Air Flow - Many may not realize how beneficial effective venting. As the price of a helmet goes up, so do the number and size of the air holes. This means that your head will be a whole lot cooler on those nice, hot days when you're on the bike.
3 - Weight - Not terribly important to most people is the weight of a helmet. More expensive helmets tend to weight less than their inexpensive counterparts. Some helmets make it feel like you're not even wearing one!
*according to the Snell Memorial Foundation, helmets should be replaced every 5 years and after each crash involving a helmet.
